How to make an elephant cake
I had never made one before, so I used the Google and found some examples. I decided to try my hand at cutting one out of two 9×13 cakes. I stacked the cakes and cut them in half.
Then I placed them like a T then aligned the edge and cut the excess off.
I used the excess to make the legs and the trunk.
It’s very important when working with cutout pieces that you put a thin layer of frosting all over the cake to seal in the crumbs, aka a crumbcoat.
And the final coat of frosting before decorating.
I originally planned to make the ears out of white chocolate that I colored to match the body. I made them and put them in the fridge to harden. I put them in place and right before I was ready to leave to deliver the cake, I saw that the ears were melting. I had to come up with a replacement fast, so I cut out more of the foam filled board I had used for the base. I frosted the ears with the remaining frosting and stuck them in place. I think that frosted sugar cookies could also be used. If the cake isn’t traveling and it’s not a hot day in July, the white chocolate would probably work, just add them at the last minute.
Wow – that turned out great Karen! Too cute! I’m sure it was a huge hit!!!
